GP Pay Award

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: GPs, Junior doctors' contract, Uncategorized

On Monday 29th July, the Department of Health and Social Care accepted the recommendation of the independent pay review body for doctors and dentists to uplift GP pay by 6%.

Here is what it will mean for GP’s pay:

What is the GP pay award?

  • The Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration Board (DDRB) - the independent pay review body for doctors’ and dentists’ pay – recommended a payrise of 6% for GPs.
  • We have accepted their recommendations in full which means that subject to consultation with the British Medical Association (BMA) we will uplift the pay element of the GP contract by 6% on a consolidated basis (an increase of 4% on top of the 2% interim uplift in April)
  • This is intended to cover GP contractor, salaried GPs and salaried practice staff.

What is the pay uplift figure?

  • This additional funding will enable practices to uplift GP and staff pay by 6% - their first meaningful pay rise in years.

When will GPs see this uplift?

  • Funding will be distributed to practices as soon as possible following consultation with the BMA
  • This funding will be backdated to April 2024, and it is our expectation this funding is passed on to all salaried general practice staff.
  • As self-employed contractors to the NHS, it is for GP practices to determine uplifts in pay for their employees.

Why are BMA members taking collective action because of a 1.9% payrise? Where has this confusion come from?

  • The BMA put a ballot to their members on the 1.9% interim contract funding uplift announced earlier in the year, before the recommendation of the independent review body recommendation (Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration Board (DDRB) and our response to that.
  • Now we have received the Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration Board (DDRB) recommendations, and government has decided to accept it in full (6%), government will make a further uplift to the GP contract funding to implement the award and backdate this to April. This uplift is subject to consultation with the BMA and further information will be available in due course.
  • A 2% uplift for pay was included in the GP contract funding in April ahead of receiving pay review body recommendations. We will therefore make a further backdated uplift of 4% to pay to make this up to the 6% consolidated uplift for pay for 2024/25.
  • Separately, an extra £82 million will be provided to solve a major issue GPs had raised prior to their ballot, which was the lack of available roles for newly qualified GPs.
  • We can confirm the award is intended to cover GP contractor, salaried GPs and salaried practice staff.
  • Funding will be distributed to practices as soon as possible following consultation with the BMA
  • As self-employed contractors to the NHS, it is for GP practices to determine uplifts in pay for their employees.
  • For factual accuracy, the interim contract uplift announced in March included an interim uplift of 2% for pay. The BMA have represented the April contract funding uplift as 1.9% to their members.
  • This means that BMA members have voted in favour of collective action over contract funding that does not reflect the 6% uplift they will shortly see through a further uplift to the GP contract.

I’m a patient worried that collective action will affect my GP appointment, what should I do?

  • The NHS is asking the public to still come forward as usual for care during collective action by GP services which started Thursday 1 August. Please see the full link to their advice
